First Day as a Temporary Housewife

Sat 14/3

The day started at midnight. The familiar period pain came back. It wasn’t very painful but this time it came in spasms of a few mins every 15min intervals. Could this be it? Thankfully Zubair was at home and i told him to be prepared.. But we waited it out. I slipped in and out of sleep as i tot i should better conserve the energy and sleep as much as i could before the real thing gets in the way.

Maybe the pain just needed Z to comfort me to sleep cause as soon as he turned in, the pain also subsided.

I had only 1 group to teach today as the 2nd one went to Malaysia. The one week sch break is here after all. Decided to make today the last day of my Sat classes too to end it nicely at 4th lesson and 2nd lesson respectively so payment won’t be too diff to calculate.

Zubair was due to go off for some class, performance or other…. I asked what would he like for bfast, omelette? At first he said that he was afraid i wouldnt make it as nice as he would himself. I told him to give me a chance.

So i beat 3 eggs into a bowl along with a spoonful of blended onions, ground chilli and cumin seeds. That’s the way he likes his egg. i’ve fried and scrambled it all… and felt something was amiss. GASP! I FORGOT THE DAMN SALT! ARghhhhh

After some deliberation, i decided to threw that batch and made another one! Paisey paisey paisey! So silly of me. after that i buttered some ghee on 3 slices of bread and toasted them over the pan too and Z LOVES them. Yayyyyyy Success!!

He was in a hurry after spending time having his bfast… but i noticed he was wearing yesterday’s shirt and so i quickly ironed for him another one for him to wear properly. =D (All these while he irons his own shirt reason being im at work 5 days a week n he’s mostly at home)

Weeee i CAN do this housewife thingy. The feeling is…. nice!

My Birthday Present

28/12/08

It was a Sunday. I can’t remember where we were from but on the way home, we decided to “walk” off those calories at Causeway Point and browsed in Body Shop. They were having a big post Xmas sale (Already!).

We were just window shopping and were about to leave when suddenly Zubair remembered, “Hey! what do you want for your bday? Take anything you like from here lah.”

So i decided on this

Peppermint Foot Treat pack which consists of:

Mini Heel Buffer

The Foot Spray, the very reason i wanted the pack

Cooling Foot Lotion

As well as Scrub.
The choice i made reflects how much my feet were hurting at that moment.

I’ve been thinking of getting a Sponge as well.

At that time i was elated! This is my First Birthday Present from the (2nd or maybe 3rd) most important person in my life
But now when i think back… Looking at the date, i think i know what triggered him to remember. (Don’t Ask)

My Day at ODAC

Being diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes, I was sent by my gynae to spend a whole day at the Obstretics Day Care aka ODAC.

I fussed the few days prior to the appointment about what books or things to bring to entertain myself while i eat hospital food. When the nurse called me, i did get a chance to ask what will i be doing there but she only answered with… “Don’t worry, we have things for you to do.” Hmmm I saw a TV in there.. but what if i dont like the show? I still have practically no idea what i was in for.

But first let me just tell you how homey it was in there.

Mum initially thought that it was at a ward or something… but its more of a… clinic. and No i didnt hafta change to the hospital robe either.

I SUPER LOVE THOSE PINK CUSHIONS! SO COMFY FOR MY BACK!
TV and stuffs. Homey if a bit old fashioned (radio, food pyramid, food models… so funny)

Having arrived at 8:10am, i was the first one there. But i was joined by 3 other ladies soon after. They were all indians, one of them a muslim, complete with Purdah and everything! She seems to be new to Singapore and knows little English, so the other Indian native who’s stayed here for 8 yrs helped her a bit with translation. I tried to show off my urdu also asking her, “Aap India se ya Pakistan se?” Are you from India or Pakistan? To which she answered the former, to my great disappointment. Like i thought we could have something in common to talk about.

As it turned out, our itinerary for the day was jam packed ok!

First, we learnt how to use the Blood Sugar Level home kit. For that day and two consecutive days each week, we hafta prick our fingers like 7 times a day to get the reading on our blood sugar level directly before and 2 hours after food and just before bedtime. It was scary at first to be poking a needle into myself. (I dont like to inflict injury upon myself unlike somebody i know. *roll eyes*) So much so that the nurse helped by holding on to my finger to apply pressure to finally cause a puncture so blood could ooze out.

After that we were given our bfast first at 9am as we haven’t eaten anything since 12midnight.

Skimmed Milk, Kway Teow Soup with minced chicken, carrots and long beans and clear soup.

If you know me, i DONT DRINK MILK. I can only take strawberry / choc flavoured milk which is a BIG NO NO for diabetics. To make things worse this was SKIMMED milk. The kind nurse then added some cocoa powder (which is a natural one and contains no added sugar) as well as 1 teeny weeny tablet of Equal artificial sweetener. It was still horrible but i had no other choice but to down it. For the dear baby. *shudder*

Afterwards, we had a session with a dietician. She went thru with us all the OK and NOT ok food for us. I was jumping for joy when she said that Coke Light, Coke Zero, Pepsi light are all permissible to a limit of a can a day. WEEEEEHOOOOOOOOOO…. at least something to appease my aching heart (or rather tummy and throat) that’s grieving the loss of cakes, chocolates and ice creams that this pregnancy has had me craving for.

I felt so sorry for two of the other ladies and their paymaster. It was very difficult for them to comprehend what the Chinese dietician is explaining with her correct English but punctuated with a lot of “hor”s and all, that i feel they could hardly benefit from this $371 (subsidised for residents, could be double for non-residents!) session.

We break for tea which was another cup of milk (ERGhhhhhhhhhh) and 3 packets of wholemeal biscuits. Very dry and lacklustre. just gobbled them up for the sake of munching.
Then we proceeded on to sample Meal plans and an indvd one-on-one with the dietician to specify what we can eat in accordance to all the existing supplements and recommendations from the gynae.
Some of the things i learnt are:
  1. It’s better for us to take small meals and shorter intervals of 2 – 3hours. This is so that our blood sugar levels won’t fluctuate erratically which is not good for the baby’s system.
  2. Vitagens and Yakults are surprisingly disallowed! I thought they would be good since they contain probiotics. but apparently too sweet i guess.
  3. Milk can be replaced with Yoghurt but not cheese. Diabetic flavoured yoghurts are available in the brand Yoghlait or something. Hafta check this out.
  4. 1 snack = 1 fruit = 1 milk. So i bluntly told the dietician that i already intended to substitute the milk for fruits. And so she suggested i buy Caltrate (calcium tablets) to supplement my and baby’s 1600mg a day need for calcium! *faint* PLease no more pills, please! Already I’m delaying to start on Obimin cos its too FREAKINGLY HUMONGOUS!
  5. Diabetes is not so much about salt as it is about sugar. Starchy foods will convert into sugar. This includes starchy vege which are ROOT veges like potatoes, carrots, tapioca and the like. In other words, potato chips are a No No but twisties and nachos are prolly alright. LOL
  6. Oil seemed innocent enough on the surface. However, oil makes the sugar in our blood stays longer than necessary. Avoid fried stuffs!

Finally, LUNCH TIME!

Rice, Chicken curry (?), long beans, apple and carrot soup.

I was the only one to start my meal with fruit. Even the kind nurse ate her fruit last. Hmmm contemplated telling her the virtues of eating ur fruit first but decided against it. I’m here to learn after all, not to teach. haha.

There were two other ladies who joined us for lunch that day. They were on the machine earlier i think. They are, i think, already diabetic when they got pregnant. I felt sorry for these two malay ladies also. They are rather obese. I could smell their insecurities as well as mine when i started to fear i might turn just like them in the future. God saves us all. Sad to say that yes, statistics show that the Malay and Indian communities here in Singapore are more prone to such chronic illness.

After lunch, we were told to go for a walk. Walking, the best form of exercise for pregnant ladies, is helpful in bringing down your BSL as u burn calories. Naughty me did some shopping in between 3 tawafs / rounds around the hospital building. I got 2 maternity dresses and rented 2 books. tsk tsk tsk I even dropped by the Patient Education Centre to ask if i could start my classes early to no avail.

After lunch, it was the nurse’s turn to talk. Madam Zuraily is very very nice though. She made sure we were all comfy and spoke at our level. Mostly, she was like a caring mother to us. Among other things, she explained what GDM (Gestational Diabetes Mellitus) is all about and how it could affect us and the baby. Like finally! All my questions were answered!

For the longest time, I had no clue what is this insulin that everybody’s talking about does. She explained (w/o us having asked her) that insulin helps to transport the sugar in our intestines into our bloodstream. Lack of insulin will result into excessive blood sent to the kidney. Too much would result in kidney failures and then the blood will pass out in our urine. I hope i’ve got it right! haha

A person with family history of diabetes is a likely candidate for GDM. However, just about any pregger could get it. This is because when we are pregnant, our body releases a certain feminine hormone. Some generates more than others and it could lead to some disturbance to the smooth function of this insulin. Likewise, u’ll be diagnosed with GDM.

Now, what will it do the baby inside of us? Two things. It can either make the baby very big or very small.

Very big because if sugar = energy = growth. If we keep feeding him/her with sugar he will keep growing bigger and bigger than is appropriate. When it’s become too big, it’ll be very very difficult for us to push the baby out normally.

Too small because when we eat too much cakes and sweets *moan* the PLACENTA will grow and grow until it becomes old, mature and die before the baby is even out. And placenta, as we know, is the one who sends food to the baby. When it dies, baby will not be getting anymore food. Hence, become small.

Now what happens AFTER we give birth? Well normally, after giving birth, the production of that feminine hormone mentioned above will reduce significantly and most of the time, our condition will stabilise and GDM will go away. That is why 6 weeks after giving birth, we will need to do another Glucose test to determine whether or not we still have it.

I felt sad for two ladies. their BSL had been esp high despite the strict hospital diet that we had for the day. After food, our BSL should read between 5.5 – 7, whereas theirs were 8 and above. This prompted the nurse to contact their gynae to advise further action. Luckily for one of them, she was just required to monitor a bit more, but for the other, she was ordered to start on insulin injections. On the tummy! Can you imagine? Me i’m already scared to put a pin on my fingers what more if i were asked to inject MYSELF with an actual NEEDLE into the TUMMY. *faint* *jelly legs*

Thankfully my own readings for the day even if it was out was less than 0.5 out of range. so i was just asked to monitor for 2 consecutive days in a week and then hand in the chart to my gynae on next visit.

On the whole, I am very very very satisfied with my day at ODAC. I’m soo happy i’ve learnt what my condition is really about. I mean.. reading and actually having someone explain it to us face to face ready to answer any Qns are really two different experiences altogether. On the other hand, I felt cheated that the gynae from polyclinic had really downplayed what GDM is all about. Humph.

Can’t wait for my next appointment! We will be doing another ultrasound scan. Yay yay!!

A Proper Date Finally.

Thurs. 18/12

After a few days of scrimping and trying to stretch the $, finally came the time for us to be able to go out on a date. Properly.

Didn’t even care that we’ve lost the discount coupon for the Flyer. We just wanted to go there. DIE DIE must go – as the slang dictates. The plan got cancelled many times before when we readjusted our monetary priorities.

Met him at the Esplanade right after work.

Check out the white thingies on the water in the background.

They are New Year message balls something or other. You buy a ball with 3 size range, write a msg w a marker on it and splash in on the water. Something like tt. Dont have details.

Oh God. We took like some 10mins to walk to the Flyer from the Esplanade. My feet could barely stand walking, and the evening was only beginning! We bought the ticket at about 6:30pm. Glad there was not a long Q and we skipped thru the fake camera shot. We were hoping to witness day to night change again, but alas it was still not properly dark by the time we got off.

The customary shot that i’ve seen at other pple’s sites lotsa times

Just before boarding.

Standing by the door is eerie ok.

Inside the allegedly biggest observatory cabin.

While waiting for the short queue in front of us, suddenly a couple got passed thru FIRST and got the entire cabin for themselves. Apparently they’ve bought the POWER up package. But No… they can’t be doing anything naughty cos there are 2 cameras in there ;)

We asked a stranger to take our photo.

To make up for the awkward smile, i deepened my dimple.

Me cldn’t stand anymore.

I like this crazy shot.

XMas lights, everybody~

Zubair the Savage Bear @ the Souvenir Shop.

Jus the Mummy to be with Xmas Tree

Inevitably, we had dinner at the foodcourt at Marina Sq. Again.

Just wanted to show you this halter neck maternity top i bought from Spring Maternity @ 50% discount. $25

We reached home AFTER 11pm.

Hari Raya Haji 08

Felt soooooo wasted that i didnt fast the day before Eid cos it was a Sunday and i slept the whole day anyways. Totally forgot about it.

I’m very thankful that it didnt take much to persuade Zubair to go visiting with us. The Key Arguments:

  1. Only 2 houses
  2. I WANT TO EAT!!!!!!!!!

So we only went to my maternal grandpa’s place and the Simei Cousin’s. Just chilled. And reached home before maghrib. Now that’s a first!

I actually wanted to go to my father’s side – Kak Lynna’s mother’s place – bcos i know the food there will be MORE DELISh / more variety and i was craving for sweet malay cakes. Unfortunately, we were not really ready in time and i promised Z only 2 houses and i absolutely can’t miss Simei’s.. So decided to skip. =( Kak Lynna, ada belen kuih2 tak? he he he

Me & Syifaa’ with matching Baju Kurung!

Just look at that cheeky Tweety Bird’s Smile. GERAMMM!!!

Please excuse my red Clowny nose, i got a mosq bite just right there. Ergh!

The one and only picture i took for the whole day!! I cant believe i didnt take any pictures!! Maybe the fact that my sis nor cousins were there made me feel lazy to lah.

Fish & Co!!!!!

Thursday 4th Dec.
I read from a friend’s website about “Muslim-Friendly” restaurants in Singapore that’s not necessarily certified and i was sooooooooo glad that FISH & CO is one of them!!!
There was a time when Zubair was newly here and he asked to eat at Fish & Co. Despite my whole body yearning for some of their food, i fought the urge and told him, “No, we can’t. What if they fry using Pig Oil?” Lol.
My friend was quick to add how she concluded this place as Muslim Friendly:

Just to share, I personally met the founder/owner of Fish and Co at an
entrepreneurship seminar back in Uni, and he assured that strictly follows halal
requirements except for the fact that his outlets sell liquor.

He shared the Muslim market is important to him so his alternative strategy is to employ Muslim employees who can do the word-of-mouth validation for him to customers.

And its true, there’s always more than a handful of them around.
But like I said, info is only to the best of my (limited) knowledge, so you may want to get reassurance from the staff if you do decide to dine at these places. Strictly
seafood outlets like Fish n Co are necessarily foolproof all the time; I remember getting the shock of my life after 2 days of happily eating great fish n chips in San Francisco, turns out most outlets use beer-battered fish!

Ok i risk sounding country bumpkin-ish but the knife’s unique! ahahah

So the very next evening, me and Zubair went to their best outlet at Park Mall, fondly called the Glasshouse. We were there pretty early and the crowd was non existent so we had EXCELLENT service attention. However, the downside was the washroom was under maintenance so i had to go to the main shopping center’s facility and one level up at that. Ergh.

I wondered why they needed to have this special fish-bone placemat
I took so long to go to the loo that my soup got cold when i returned and the very proactive and sensitive waiter offered to reheat the soup. Damn. I forgot to give him a fish bone for his individual service.
We had Fish Chowder for starters. I was a bit apprehensive about having FISH Soup lah so called but to my delight, it didnt taste Fishy AT ALL!! Its just as creamy and as nice as mushroom soup only better!
I tell you i cant take a good photo nowadays with the weight im putting on
Nor can i smile like i used to – with teeth showing – it will make my nose look SO BLOODY ROUND!

Another appetiser – FRIED CALAMARI

I wanted to order the Seafood platter, but was afraid it might be too much so ordered Calamari instead. A few min later, it finally struck me that Zubair doesnt really eat squid. So we had to send them packing. Hmmm well … its nice… but its not really the kind of calamari i like… i love with more batter. The crispier the better. But it did taste nice.

Mine – Danish Fish & Chips

They had a special $10 nett promotion for their 10th anniversary with special Fish & Chips menu. One of them being this Danish Fish & Chips with OOOOOOOOZing Mozarella cheese!!!! Now this is the Fish & Chips with cheese ive been dreaming about!!! I’ve only been taking the one @ Fig & Olive’s with half slice of Cheddar cheese on top, so i can tell you this one is HEAVEN!

Zubair’s Something Ginza Salmon.

Naturally, he’d prefer to eat them with rice and it looks yummy – the rice i mean. But when he fed me some, i felt it was tasteless. Then again i’m not a very fishy person UNLESS its deep fried. Zubair the Salmon lover enjoyed it tremendously.
After finishing the soup and fries, I cldn’t finish the Fish nor the Calamari so we had to pack it. Later that night when we reheated it, it was still as nice as ever, ok!!

The following day, i described my exp to the friend who recommended me this place in the first place. Suddenly she had a craving for it, and the two of us crazy Preggers went for an impromptu lunch @ Suntec City outlet.

I’m a happy girl. … (Or should i start considering myself as a woman?)

S’pore Flyer Date Turned Into….

It’s Tuesday again and we got to go out~! Hoorayyy

The plan was to go to Singapore Flyer because i got 15% discount coupon from AIA for upcoming Bday (i know, lame) as well as an upgrade to express boarding. Thought that 6.45 would be just nice to board for 30min…

When i met Zubair at Esplanade and asked to look at the coupon, he put on a straight face and said, “I didnt bring.” He was always teasing me like that that i thought he was kidding about it too this time. Alas, he really didnt bring it!

Ok so we decided we were not fated to board the flyer that day and went to the library instead and borrowed 5 DVDs.

Zubair had an idea to go have dinner at Clarke Quay… but i had to turn down the idea cos my feet cldn’t take it anymore and suggested Marina Square foodcourt instead. Thankfully he was happy with the idea cos the Indian stall makes nice chappati. Yayyy Win Win situation.

After that we really just hung out… looking at wallets, shoes, and stuffs. It’s a miracle that i know how to window shop now. And then my feet started screaming again to sit down. So we took the opportunity to indulge in some ….

ICE CREAM!!!!!!!!!

Tembamness!!!! (Chubbiness!!)
OMG, what is it with me and ice cream??? Simply can’t get enough of them. Hafta punctuate meals with them. Tsk tsk tsk *shake head*

New Colleague

Our new colleague has been with us for almost 2 weeks now.

On her first day, she looked very serious and grim. She looked like a 30+ tough (as well as chunky) claims person. We had sorta expected a slim aloof lady joining us… just the sorta guy the mgr would hire. LOL

However, over the next few days I gotta know her better and she’s really a funny bubbly girl… just like me! She giggles at everything~

She’s also 37 and single with no intention to get married. She looks young lah! Maybe cause she laughs all the time. I think she would make a good lunch partner too.

So now i feel like i have more “friends” in this dept. *All smiles*
