TV – In Your Room or….

I’ve never had a TV in my room. Sometimes i daydream about having one…

But then after having slept in my sister’s room w a TV a couple of nights… i realised that i can’t sleep well with TV in the room.

For one, i will strain my eyes to continue watching the show even tho its past midnight and then stay up to watch the next 1hr program. For another, if i fell asleep in the middle of it, i will be jolted awake at some point at the sound of it.

Im now thinking… for my marital room… as in when we get our own place, do i want the TV in the bedroom or jsut the living room?

At it is, im always begging Z to spend some time with ME and not the computer esp at night b4 i go to sleep. Maybe i should even put the computer outside too.

There was this article on MSn webpage awhile ago saying that a TV in your room may hamper your … erm… marital activities.

BUT BUT BUT….

I imagine i would rather he be in the same room albeit in front of the computer/TV than being in a totally diff room in front of the computer/TV.

So how? IN or OUT?

Do the poll on the right!

Changes in my Room

Firstly, Now it looks neater with a proper keyboard stand instead of the instrument sitting on two IKEA stools. This is so that if Zubair wants to bring it out to the living room for practice, it wont take precious table space; Also good for any concert performance.

This keyboard stand T20 is courtesy of Ayah. Thank you, Ayah.

I did some homework before purchasing this item. Called Yamaha to ask how much is the proper stand for PSR – S500 series and he said $68 before disc. How much disc? i asked. 5%

According to History, Yamaha always charge higher. The actual keyboard we bought at Mustafa at almost $200 less!! So to be sure i’m getting the best deal, I called up Mustafa and asked. They don’t have a T20 issued by Yamaha but said they have a stand good for S500 @ $79!!!

Wah liao. Like this can i still trust Mustafa for EVERY single thing? I know already some of the food stuffs are more exp than say… NTUC. Do i want to continue shopping there? Hmmmm

Good news is because we are a member of Yamaha (membership is free from our last purchase: keyboard bag) we got 10%. So we paid just $58.60!! weeehooo

““““““““““““““““““““““`

This is the window in my room. Nothing seems out of place right? Exactly! Now everything is in working condition!

LOL… for the past month or two one of the rivets of that middle one came loose and it almost came off. So we had to support it by closing the other half of the window, resulting in only half a window opened (the other half – left most – is covered by a window unit air conditioner).

For a longgggggggggggg time we’ve been living with it. Until one day when it was just too hot to bear, i asked Ayah what’s the progress on changing these windows. That’s when i found out that he had already called 5 different contractors approved by HDB (Housing Development Board) to do this change of rivets from aluminium to steel (it was ruled to be mandatory that ALL housing window rivets in Singapore must be changed to stainless steel by a certain date, due to countless mishaps that caused grave injuries).

Anyways, all these 5 contractors said that they are all fully booked. I thought it might be because of Hari Raya or Eid peak period where everybody rushes to renovate their house. But Ayah thought that its because it is such a small job, they don’t wanna do it anymore. As such, i prepared myself mentally to put up with it all thru Eid. Room becomes smelly with only half a window open, hence the need for air freshener (lol).

Fortunately, by some act of miracle, Ayah happened to call the next contractor in line in the listing and magically, they can do it and they are free. PLUS when ayah mentioned that one of the windows have already … how do i say… fallen?… they told Ayah they will come right the next day! Oh bless them!

At the end of the day, Mummy described how it was very scary when they had to change the half that’s fixed with the aircon. The guy had to hang on the parapet OUTSIDE the house or something to that effect.

The boss even said to the trainee Indian guy, “Don’t drop the window, You drop nevermind.” LOL! Luckily, we’re only on 2nd floor!

Next Change: is curtains, carpet, bedsheet and standing fan! That $30 or $40 fan that i wrote about sometime ago failed on us just after 1yr! The bugger! Might as well buy that $19.90 Akira brand.

More changes to come: my extreme left side of the built-in wardrobe (Nan, i think u can imagine which one this is) will be getting a make over to welcome the baby =)

Right now it is bare, in the sense that it has no divider no nothing. Imagine that u can pile 3 cots standing up in that wardrobe. So intend to fix a bar at the top for hanging more clothes. Then I will put plastic chests of drawers at the right half of it for baby’s clothes, toiletries and such.

Can’t wait!

Why is My Room So Hot?

My Room is hotter than the 2 other bedrooms facing the road. Staying in the living room is a much cooler refuge. So imagine how do we sleep?

A real dilemma each time. Can’t leave the air con turned on over night bcos i’ll get a stuffed nose and won’t be able to sleep. If we don’t, i wont be able to sleep anyway sweating like mad. Worse is two of the windows are broken and we can’t even leave it open at night! HUARGHHHHHHH

Some probably reasons why my room is hotter than my sisters’:

  1. The desktop computer is always switched on
  2. We dont have the curtains drawn
  3. The angle of our room is in such a way that the sun only shines at our middle room?
  4. The colour of paint on the walls?
  5. We have sinned too much.
  6. We don’t turn on the aircon much to cool the room down?

No wonder we are arguing so much. The room is so hot like hell. Really.

A Ray of Hope

I met a Singaporean who married a Pakistani last Sat.

She is a friend of a friend. After receiving my msg from multiply, she immediately called me on my hp. While she sounds excited, her husband sounded more enthusiastic and anxious to help his fellow countryman.

I wasn’t sure of the location of her shop but roughly thought this particular one was it and peered in. She nodded at me and i approached. Ah… no wonder she recognised me… she read most part of my blog already esp the Pakistan trip part.

We moved to chat at the coffee shop next door. Her hub bought us drinks. At first, i could feel he was being a bit formal lah, while me… i was at a total loss cos they were talking in Urdu/Punjabi. Even my new found friend understood them. Well she IS a Pakistani too and have been married for… 6 – 7 yrs already… not surprising lah right.

Then they mentioned that they read our blog esp the part where Zubair told me this particular sweet’s name is Kanjer Halwa and they laughed and laughed. After that, Zubair started to relax and joke around also.

They browsed thru Z’s resume and certs. and then he assured us that he will see to it that Z gets a job here in Singapore soonest thru many of his contacts in Mustafa, Usman Restaurant etc etc…

We could see a ray of hope in the horizon.

We discussed and talked about a lot of things. They also shared their sweet story of how they met! Plus, they strongly encouraged us to buy a house ONLY direct from HDB. Thankfully, Z also agreed to postpone the decision of buying a house but will review it again once he’s stable in his job.

Felt a bit paisei / malu / embarassed that they even treated us to a meal!

Don’t worry Fara, when Z gets a job, we will definitely give you both a treat~ We also have a cooking session in the list of To-Dos yeah? *wink*

Hopes of Buying Our Own House CRUSHED

I got a reply from HDB re my enquiry about buying a house with a Pakistani husband.

Her reply as follows:

We wish to inform you that the Non-Citizen Spouse Scheme allows a citizen above the age of 21 but below 35 to buy a resale flat from the open market with a non-citizen spouse who holds a long-term social visit pass (including work permit) of at least 6 months.

I got hopeful when it says 6 months of SVP as Zubair has been granted just that and which will start on 7th May.

So i scrambled to find the 3-room house to buy so that he is still “eligible” when we register to get the house something or other.

However calls with two house agents and i found out that:

  1. Its the seller’s market now
  2. A lot of people are downgrading now
  3. Causing a demand for 3- and 4 -room flats
  4. And they are demanding AT LEAST 25k above valuation (of average 200k depending on location)
  5. Which is payable in CASH

Hello??? Who has 25k in blardi CASh!?? If there is anybody, i will go and rob him! Yeah i’m THAT desperate! LOL!

But my friend told me not to give up. There might be some urgent sellers like divorce cases or demise of one of the owners, etc etc.

And now i just reread her reply and it says “including work permit”??? *faint

Meet the MP

We went to the Meet the MP session last night to seek their help.

After 2 hours of waiting and an extensive discussion, the conclusion is:

  1. They can’t help Zubair with job application bcos his is a Work Permit case and they can’t TELL a private company to employ him. I wonder how they help the locals with finding job then?
  2. What he can do for him is that, WHEN we have an employer who’s ready to take him on, then he can help to write a letter to the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) to issue him a work permit. That is if the MOM doesn’t want to bcos he has less than 6months visa.
  3. instead, i asked him to help us to write YET another letter to ICA to grant Z a Long Term Visit Pass. Im not so hopeful on this one cause the previous two letters said he is not eligible. Just what the criteria is is beyond me. But no harm trying again, i suppose.
  4. He did confirm what Y had told me very much earlier: it will be MUCH EASIER to get PR when we have a baby, esp when we’ve bought a house already. This is to protect the family nucleus.
  5. He also told us to go and apply at Music schools, Mediacorp and hotels. I said we have already. but i hope things are diff now that he has 1/2 a cert and all the experience needed.

So anyone wanna hire my husband? Please?…. Please?

Officially Certified to Marry!

In other words, “Aku dah boleh kahwinnn!!!”

Wait a minute! Oops, i forgot, I’m already married!

No lah.. just that we Malays have a saying that if u cant cook, u cant marry yet. And today, i have officially COOKED from scratch without any help nor supervision! Yayy

Browsing thru Zu’s Kitchen, i stumbled upon this Corned Beef Kheema recommended to eat with Chappati. I have always LOVED corned beef but mummy NEVER cooked it, so this is my chance! PLUS, we still have that ATTA flour we bought long time ago! LOL. and what better meal to learn other than my hubby’s fav n staple dish!

I warned mummy many times to let me do this on my own. She told me yeah she’ll be out when im cooking. But on the day itself, she took a nap. Fair enough. Good thing i went thru the method w mummy yesterday while buying groceries. She told me, that for the garlic and shallots, just take 2tbs from the blended one she’s prepared in advance. Ginger, 1/2 tsp. Lemon juice i can use lime also (limau kasturi). press them on top of a strainer.

I planned to do the Chickpea Chappati from Zu’s recipe but after going thru w mummy, we decided against it. As a beginner, i think i’ll start with a simple plain chappati first lah.

Sifting the flour.

Normally, its not required to sift flours in packet, but bcos the packet was left opened for some time, we tot it best to sift. (Plus, actually it said Best before sept 07! Shhhhh)

The flour mix is simple enough. Just add 75ml for every 100gm of flour. I made 500gm. Zu said to put the dough aside for 1 – 2 hrs, covered in cling wrap. So in the meantime, i fold the laundry, lest the cooking smell will stick to the clothes!

First problem encountered: How to open this Corned Beef can?

So complicated! Luckily, Kak Ly was around and she’s used this corned beef before. She told me to take off the key, remove the paper label, twist the key along the start point. Then it broke half way!!! After staring at it for some time, finally decided to use the can opener to stab around it. *dangerous!*

Second Problem: Err… where is the blended shallots and ginger and meat powder? Kak Ly showed me where. How come the shallots not as green as usual? and the juice sort of separated into two with the “hampas” or residue on top. *shrug* Meat powder is the packet right below there unopened. and ginger is in that small container at the side.

So there, everything’s prepared. In the transparent bowl is the corned beef already mixed with ginger and shallots. In the black bowl is the not so cubed potato. Mixed vege. and the meat curry powder with some water to make a paste.

Put in the Oil, spices, Meat, potato, mixed vege, curry paste, chilli sauce (lots of!!), tomato sauce. and this is where i made a mistake. i pressed the lime but forgot the strainer! I tot, “Ah nevermind lah, when they eat, they can put it aside on their own lah.” Okayed by Mummy.

While waiting for the potatoes to cook, and mind, it takes quite a while, i got the chappati ready.

Problem No 3: How come the dough stubbornly stick despite putting flour all over it? Could it be cos the dough’s too soft/lembik? Should we use the normal flour (tepung gandum) for this?

I finally had to ask mummy how. She said, no the texture’s fine. But put a brown paper on top of the chopping board (yes i was using the chopping board to roll out the dough! LOL), and dont press too hard.

The golf ball sized dough ready to be rolled out.

And there you go… my very FIRST CHAPPATI!! Hooray!!!

Ammi will be proud of me i hope.

One thing u must know is, making chappati creates a hell of a mess!

At first, my chappati were very lopsided… Mummy said that we should turn the dough 90 degrees and roll it out on that side, so u can have a nice round chappati. but some people, dont need to raise the dough to turn it, just turn ur body and rolling pin!

Problem No 4: My dough is so soft n fragile that it cant help but stick on the paper. When it sticks, my nicely rolled out dough breaks/koyak!!! Sometimes, i hafta do it all over again, but if its not too bad, i just dump it on the pan.

It’s amazing how chappati doesnt need a single drop of oil on the pan to cook! While I like mine thin and crispy, Mummy like hers thick and soft! Darling, how do u like yours, honey?

I started cooking about 1pm. and finished at 3pm!!! Its the chappati that takes a long time! that 500gm can make round about 10 – 12 pcs, didnt really count tho.

There you go. That’s my plate of Roti n Kheema.
I was too famished when i finished that i only remembered to take a photo after i started eating already! LOL

Dont forget to clean the kitchen afterwards!

But hey, isn’t it only fair that the one who cooks get to rest? *cheeky smile* So Xubi, can you help me with these, baby?

So there… Since i’m already married… i hereby certify myself Able to Live on My Own. hahah See… now i can cook… I like to use the vacuum now.. and mopping is easy with the wet tissue on the japanese stick. Aiyah dont know what its called. And i already know that washing clothes is easy.

I just hafta overcome my hatred for ironing clothes. As long as u dont give me diff material like silk or whatever (that the crease just wont disappear!!!) and if u dont mind not having that line in the middle of ur pants, that ironing is manageable.

Also, i still hafta prove that i can take care of a baby on my own! Ergh… being the youngest one, ive never taken care of a baby before. Even for Syifaa’, tho i always play with her, entertain her n teach her stuffs, I wont know how to make her milk, nor change her diaper. OMG! How to bathe a baby????

Well.. that’s another chapter in my life, that is still mysteriously out there in the far future. haha..

Now, in the near future, or more specifically, this weekend, i hope to cook again! Im loving it lah!

Japanese Uncle

Cik Ajis moved in to his new Anchorvale house Sat and invited us over yesterday!

and we discussed more housing issues.

  1. He bought this 5room flat at 170k direct from HDB
  2. He did the floors, kitchen cabinets and wardrobe at 17k
  3. Mummy said get one near parents will get another $40k grant even though another sibling have already taken that grant
  4. If i buy that 3-room Marsiling @ 60k, i’d finish paying the house when i buy it! MIRACULOUS!
  5. Kak Long said, better to buy cheaper house and balance of the money buy a car than buy that 365k house in Farrer Park Rd. Which is true cos if u have a car u get to go more places, not just Little India.

I find it totally ridiculous that we, my fav cuzzies and i, were talking to each other, camera whoring our own faces and ignoring the hosts! we even snapped off most of the food that we brought for them!! we even forgot to take picture of the house! I took the liberty of taking pictures of the other members of the family and wanted to snap the house also but a bit paisei/shy?

But nearly towards the end of the day Aunty Kouri and i had something in common to talk about. SHE LOVES PUNJABI suits! She’s been wanting one for the past 2 or 3 yrs!! hehehe we’ll definitely make her some while we’re in Pakistan. We discussed material, colours, type ie for everyday or functions bla bla bla. We talked about how we met and how THEY met. we talked about her pregnancy.

She’s due next month and really dont look like it! She’s soooooo small. So frail and fragile like most japanese women are. We’ll have a new cuzzie!! Can’t wait to see how a Malay and Japanese mix will look like. Nur commented that this baby will be born an Aunty!!! hahaha and he or she’s gonna be a BABY AUNTY to Syifaa’, my niece. HAHAHHA So funny.

While i enjoy spending time just with Zubair the two of us… i cant wait to see how our children will be like! Will they have long and sharp noses? chubby cheeks? Long lashes? dimples? Pimply? Short? Hairy???

And what if all four are boys? it’ll be chaos in the house just like Malcolm in the middle. I SOOO dont wanna be like the mother! And im soooooooooo liking MITM on www.veoh.com bcos somebody took the initiative to upload every single episode with no missing ones there. I’m at Season 2 Episode 5 and there’s like up to 7 seasons uploaded already. Zubair is soooo gonna be sick of it by the time i finish! hahaha

BTW, my blog title’s Japanese Uncle bcos Cik Ajis speaks japanese like SUPER fluently. And with them living at home just the two of them, Aunty Kouri has little chance to learn Malay since Cik Ajis speaks Japanese to her, unlike Zubair, we’re always hitting Malay words at him.

PS: This entry is so disorganised! haha

Own House?

We have been dreaming about our own house…

My research at the HDB (Housing Development Board – that’s where we buy the FLATS from) website shows that

  1. we are NOT eligible to buy yet bcos we didnt meet the criteria of having at least one other occupier of the house to be Singaporean or PR (Permanent Resident).
  2. But we can get a grant of $20,000 for low income families below 2500/m. but must be in employment for 2 yrs. wait for Apr 08
  3. 3-room flat in Woodlands/Marsiling is about 60,000
  4. 4-room flat in Sembawang is 139,000
  5. 5-room flat in Farrer Park Rd (OUR DREAM house location bcos its super new to Little India) is 365,000!!!!
  6. Using the financial calculator online (not very accurate i think), i think we will only be comfortable to buy a house about 200k

and so we have a lot of questions:

  1. can sister be eligible as an occupier?
  2. What is the max loan amount HDB can give us?
  3. If my dream house is not on the HDB list, can i and how do i buy from the open market? is there any price difference?

Actually i have a lot more questions, but i cant seem to remember it now.

Things to think about when buying our own house are:

  1. Bills: Utility, Internet, Conservation? (sampah), taxes???
  2. Additional own transport costs (since currently i always take a lift from dad)
  3. FURNITURE!!!

Of course these are just planning lah. Definitely, we will hafta wait till Zubair’s got a stable job and everything. We’re just looking ahead and at the same time fantasise…

You know, we actually surveyed the HDBs around Little India that night. We went up to the 10th floor of the Farrer Park Road (the newer flats) and the view was just breathtaking! the surroundings are nice. I wont even mind if we hafta buy from the old flat bcos i LOVE little India!!! It’s so lively with 24-hr shopping centre Mustafa around… late night supper/shopping… saree/shalwar kameez ogling… and i love the fact that Zubair loves it too :D

OK sabar sabar…
